Cuerda Seca

I am in love with the South, Spain in particular.

In the Alhambra in Granada I marveled at the beautiful tiles.

Recently I discovered the technique that was used to make them and so of course I had to give them a new vibe.

This technique gives a lot of possibilities to paint with glazes without the colours merging.

Cuerda Seca, interpretation of ancient technique

I played around with the ancient Cuerda Seca technique that uses a greasy component to keep glazes in separate fields.

Mixing olive oil with Manganese, drawing with this mix, and then filling the spaces with glazes.

As I fired them at 1250 degrees C the glazes become liquid. When a thick layer has been applied, they overflow their boundaries. Overflow. And i ended up in overflow of gratitude.
